Update 06/16/2014: VMware released a patch to fix this issue. You can get details at KB2077360

Recently VMware and some NetApp customers uncovered a critical bug in the NFS storage stack in vSphere 5.5 Update 1. This bug causes NFS datastores to disconnect randomly several times a day.

VMware has acknowledged this problem as a bug and is working on a solution. You can find latest information in KB2076392.

So if you are using NFS (no matter what storage system you use - they are all affected) with vSphere 5.5 do NOT update to Update 1 at this time.
