Snap preview for Veeam B&R 6.5

Later this year Veeam will release version 6.5 of their backup tool Veeam Backup&Replication. Beside some general bug fixes and improvements, version 6.5 will include the following new features:

  • Exchange Browser: agentless restore of Exchange objects like mails, notes, calendar entries etc. without starting a virtual lab as with U-AIR for Exchange. This will be available for Exchange 2010. It will not replace U-AIR for Exchange but will rather be a complement for it. And best of it all: it will be free for all Veeam users.

  • Support for SAN snapshots: using very fast and efficient snapshot capabilities from your storage hardware, Veeam can use these snapshots to restore whole VMs and single files in a consistent way. This feature is not intended to be a 100% replacement of backup to repositories like in older versions since backup to repositories on other storage systems still is more secure. But using SAN snapshots with Veeam will be a very fast way to do backup an recovery. One little problem: this feature is highly vendor specific and with the release of 6.5 only HP's Lefthand storage (both VSA and hardware appliances) will be supportet. No other storage hardware is on the HCL.

  • Support for vSphere 5.1 and Hyper-V 2012: the latest versions of the two leading hypervisors will be fully supported with 6.5

All customers under support&subscriptions can upgrade to 6.5 at no additional costs.
